It took a full day's worth of work, but 3,000 Texans from four counties around Austin were able to receive their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine during a drive-through clinic this weekend.

Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, residents of Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays and Travis counties pulled into the clinic for the Moderna vaccine. The 3,000 goal was met just after 5 p.m., a spokesperson for Travis County said.

Thousands of Austin residents wait in their cars to get vaccinated at the Circuit of the Americas parking lot on Saturday, February 27, 2021.

It was Austin's first mass vaccine site, hosted at the Circuit of the Americas. The doses were granted by the Texas Department of State Health Services, following a joint letter sent to state and federal health leaders by judges from the four counties asking for more vaccine.

Those who received the vaccine include CommUnityCare patients, as well those who met Phases 1A and 1B criteria. They will receive their second and final dose in four weeks.
