Where to get free water and donate water in Austin and Central Texas

As power outages subside across Central Texas after a freezing winter storm, many residents' pressing crisis has become the search for water. All around the region, water outages have been reported, and the city of Austin is under a boil water notice. 

Austin Mayor Steve Adler said 1 million gallons of water were being shipped from neighboring states to Austin on Friday for distribution. City Manager Spencer Cronk said water distribution information is expected to be shared sometime Friday evening.

Local organizations and businesses are stepping up to help those in need. Here's where to find free, potable water and where to donate it if you have extra.

Where to get free water

• The city is opening 10 water distribution sites Sunday. Distribution begins at 9 a.m. at one site: Austin Community College's Pinnacle Campus in Southwest Austin at 7748 Highway 290 West, 78736.

Lakeline Station (13625 Lyndhurst Blvd, 78717)

Walnut Creek Park (12138 N. Lamar Blvd, 78753)

Zilker Park (2301 Barton Springs Rd., 78746)

Anderson High School (8403 Mesa Dr., 78759)

Each pickup will include one case of bottled water. Each is a drivethru site; those arriving on foot are urged to bring a cart or carrier for transporting the case of water. The city is targeting water distribution to people who do not have the ability to buy or boil water. 

• Bunkhouse Group is offering three locations — Hotel San Jose, Jo's Coffee on Red River Street, Fair Market — for water pickup on Sunday:

• The Colorado-based Natural Grocers chain has announced that it is giving away up to 2 gallons of water for free to people who need it. The stores have a reverse osmosis and ultraviolet sterilization process that filters the water, making it safe to drink without boiling.

The Austin-area stores open at 10 a.m. on Thursday and are located at 4615 N. Lamar Blvd., 1335 E Whitestone Blvd. in Cedar Park and at 1301 W. University Ave. in Georgetown and at 10515 N. Mopac Expressway in the Arbor Walk shopping center.

A spokesperson says the stores will be giving away the water through Tuesday, Feb. 23. Customers need to bring their own container for the water.

• A water filling station is available at Hays High School, 4800 Jack C Hays Trail, on Friday until 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring a container to fill. Residents are allowed up to 5 gallons per person. Water is potable and does not have to be boiled. 

• Compadre Brewing in Pflugerville is doing free water fill-ups (BYO container) until 6 p.m. on Friday at 16920 Joe Barbee Drive, Building 1.

• 4th Tap Brewing (10615 Metric Blvd.) is offering 5 gallons of water per household from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, but it will need to be boiled at home. 

• Adelbert's Brewery (2314 Rutland Drive, No. 100) is filling up containers from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday.

• Austin Beerworks (3001 Industrial Terrace) will fill containers from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

• Hopsquad Brewing (2307 Kramer Lane) is filling up to 5 gallons from noon to 5 p.m. Friday. 

• Central District Brewing (417 Red River St.) is filling up containers until 6 p.m. Friday.

• 512 Brewing Company will fill containers from noon to 5 p.m. Friday

• Beerburg Brewing is giving away free water for anyone who needs it at 13476 Fitzhugh Road from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

• The city of Buda is setting up a drinking water filling distribution station in the Buda YMCA parking lot from noon to 4 p.m. Friday, or while supplies last. Bring a container. 

• South Austin brewery St. Elmo Brewing Co. is open noon to 5 p.m. Friday with hot and cold water; bring a sanitized container to 440 E. St. Elmo Road, Suite G-2. 

• The Austin restaurant and brewery Batchis also giving away water at its East Austin facility, 3220 Manor Road. 

• Prep To Your Door is a food delivery service that is giving away potable drinking water at its headquarters, 507 Calles Street (through the patio door next to the Uber office), from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday. 

• Meanwhile Brewing in Southeast Austin is giving away water starting at 10 a.m. Friday until it runs out.  

• Black Star Co-op and the Brewtorium in North Central Austin, Lazarus Brewing in East Austin and Infamous Brewing in Hudson Bend are all also giving away water at their breweries during limited hours this week.

• Simply Rain Water is giving away water at the Meteor Cafe on South Congress from 10 a.m. to noon and at Gabriela's restaurant in East Austin from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday.

• Emergency food and water distribution will be available Friday at Dove Springs Rec Center (1:30 p.m., 5801 Ainez Drive), Millennium Youth Center (2:30 p.m., 1156 Hargrave St.), Dailey Middle School (2 p.m., 14000 Westall St.) and Navarro High School (2:30 p.m., 1201 Payton Gin Road), according to City Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison.

• Hays County area residents can pick up bottled water at Hays County Precinct 4 office (195 Roger Hanks Parkway, Dripping Springs) Henly Fire Department (7072 W, U.S. 290, Dripping Springs), Cypress Creek Church (211 Stillwater Road, Wimberley), Woodcreek City Hall (41 Champions Circle, Wimberley), South Hays Fire Department (3528 Hunter Road, San Marcos), PromiseLand Church (1650 Lime Kiln Road, San Marcos), San Marcos City Hall (630 E Hopkins St.), Cuevas Produce (100 Linda Drive, San Marcos), Chapa Middle School (while supplies last, 401 W. FM 150, Kyle).

• Austin organization Boss Babes is teaming up with Austin EMS Association to collect sealed, potable water for distribution to warming centers and other public resource sites. Email thebabes@bossbabes.org to coordinate a drop-off until 6 p.m. Friday at 916 Springdale Road, Building 5, Unit 103.

• Austin ECHO "is looking for volunteers who have water or can access it to deliver bottled water or jugs filled at breweries or other potable sources" to low-income households. Sign up via their Google Form.

• According to City Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison, water donations are being accepted at Millennium Youth Entertainment Center, 1154 Hargrave St., from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
