Siblings Willie and Bobbie Nelson share spotlight in upcoming memoir
Never mind “Me and Bobby McGee,” here’s “Me and Sister Bobbie.” The latest book about Willie Nelson has a sweet sibling spin to it: His older sister Bobbie Nelson, who’s played in Willie’s legendary Family band for decades, gets equal billing and attention.
“Me and Sister Bobbie: True Tales of the Family Band” is due Sept. 15 from Random House. Author David Ritz, who worked with Willie on the 2015 autobiography “It’s a Long Story: My Life,” returns for this 288-page hardcover volume described as “a heartfelt memoir of the lifelong bond between Willie and his only sibling.”
The press release announcing the book adds that an alternating-chapter structure ”weaves together Willie and Bobbie's journeys as they experienced them both side-by-side and apart.” Bobbie turned 89 on Jan. 1; Willie turned 87 on April 29.
Also in the works is a children’s picture book that Willie and Bobbie wrote with Chris Barton, tentatively titled “Sister, Brother, Family: Our Childhood in Music.” That one is scheduled for fall 2021 on Doubleday Books for Young Readers.
Nelson’s new album, “First Rose of Spring,” is due July 3 from Legacy Recordings, pushed back from an initially planned April release.
